Kundalini awakening is described as a profound transformation that dismantles illusions to recreate the individual as a new being with direct access to universal intelligence and divine consciousness.
The process is characterized by a gradual ascent through the chakras, where each stage unlocks specific benefits:
- Root Chakra: Dissolves fear and insecurity, replacing them with courage and a deep, instinctive connection to life.
- Sacral Chakra: Unlocks creativity, artistic expression, and a sense of freedom from survival anxiety, fostering a belief that the universe sustains the individual.
- Solar Plexus: Reveals one’s life purpose (ikigai), aligning personal passions and skills with world needs to create a dynamic, meaningful career.
- Heart Chakra: Opens the capacity for unconditional love, healing emotional wounds, and fostering compassion for oneself and all existence.
- Throat, Third Eye, and Crown: Lead to speaking truth with clarity, heightened intuition and insight, and the dissolution of the ego into enlightenment.
Beyond chakra-specific shifts, the awakening is associated with a range of physical and spiritual improvements, including increased IQ and creativity, enhanced psychic abilities, slowed aging, and a blissful perception of sound (such as Aum) inside the ears. Individuals often report feeling a deep sense of purification, emotional healing, and a stronger connection to the universe, while the energy is said to rewire the nervous system and burn karmas associated with past traumas.
However, the experience can be intense, overwhelming, and terrifying, as it forces the individual to confront unresolved traumas and “personal demons” that surface during the cleansing process. Because the energy cannot be held back once the “floodgates open,” experts emphasize that seeking guidance from an enlightened guru or experienced teacher is crucial to navigate the transformation safely.
In Hinduism, Kundalini means ’coiled snake’, that is a form of divine feminine energy (or Shakti) believed to be located at the base of the spine. It is an important concept in Śhaiva Tantra, where it is believed to be a force or power associated with the divine aspect of the Goddess. This energy in the subtle body, when cultivated and awakened through tantric practice, is believed to lead to spiritual liberation.
When awakened, kuṇḍalinī is described as rising up from the muladhara chakra, through the central nadi (called sushumna) inside or alongside the spine reaching the top of the head. The progress of kuṇḍalinī through the different chakras is believed to achieve different levels of awakening and a mystical experience, until Kundalini finally reaches the top of the head, Sahasrara or crown chakra, producing a profound transformation of consciousness.
Those that claim to have had a kundalini awakening have stated that the experience varied from euphoria to a near death experience, sometimes with erratic movements. According to many, the event marks a turning point in life after which nothing is the same.
